Book Review: Mortal Engines

Book: Mortal Engines

Author: Philip Reeve

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

This story is set thousands of years in the future, where towns and cities have moved onto large mechanical bases and have become mobile. Towns eat tows and London is no exception, it's merciless jaws eat and harvest other towns for parts.

This book is written very well and does not get boring on any page. The different world idea is similar to His Dark Materials and is written as well, so for this reason, I have awarded Mortal Engines an 8.5 out of 10.

Book: In Search of The Greeks

Author: James Renshaw

This is an excellent book all about Greek history! There are six main topics:

1.) Greek Religion

2.) The Olympic Games

3.) Athenian Drama

4.) Athenian Society

5.) Athenian Democracy

6.) Sparta

Excellent book! If you really enjoyed learning about the Greek history, come to Classical Civilization Club, on Monday lunchtime or Wednesday afterschool in room 203.

Marx for Beginners: Book Review

Book: Marx for Beginners

Author: Rius

I picked up this book so that I could make my mind up about communism ideas. This book must be read from beginning to end in chronological order to be understood. And there is a very useful glossary in the back for any words you are unsure of. I don not recommend reading this book all in one go, to avoid a collosal brainache!

The reason why I have only given this book a 7/10 is the bias that we encounter throughout the book.

The Zombie Survival Guide: Book Review

Book: The Zombie Survival Guide.

Author: Max Brooks

This amazingly written book is written in a non-fictional way and goes into so much detail that at the end of it, you suddenly feel quite vulnerable and begin to plan your defence!

Brooks even goes into detail on the science of zombies and answers questions that would make zombie movies un-realistic. E.g: How do they moan if they do not breath?

Advice is given on weapon choice, how to defend your home, how to survive on the run, how to survive in numbers and of course how to kill un-dead assailant.

King's Book Club

On World Book Day 2012(1st March), The King's School Library will be launching The King's Book Club, open to anyone in years 7, 8 and 9. We can't tell you any more now, but if you've got any ideas for the club, or would like to be involved, speak to a member of the Library Team.

We've also been busy creating a World Book Day display, so why not pop into the Library and let us know what you think!

Picture Book Competition

ReadingZone has launched a World Book Day competition for children and young people aged 4 -18 to make a picture book, judged by Jacqueline Wilson’s illustrator, Nick Sharratt. They want a brilliant story, told in words and pictures in up to 24 pages! You can see tips, guidelines and a template at www.ReadingZone.com.

There are some fantastic prizes, including the chance to meet a fabulous author at school, sets of books for the school library, and you’ll receive printed copies of your own picture book!
You don’t have to be brilliant at writing or a fantastic artist to make a great picture book, anyone can have a go – you just need an idea or character to start with.

The competition launched in January 2012 and we hope that as many schools and young people as possible will be able to make picture books during World Book Day. The competition will close on 14th April and the winners will be announced on www.ReadingZone.com in May 2012.

500 Word Story Competition

It's back! On Monday 30 January 2012 Chris Evans launched the second 500 WORDS short story competition, open to anyone in the UK aged 13 and under.

Last year the competition had around 30,000 entries and this year is going to be bigger and better than ever!

To enter, your story has to be no more than 500 words, and must be an original fictional work by the entrant. The writers of the 50 best stories will be invited to join Radio 2 when they broadcast the Chris Evans Breakfast Show live from the Hay Festival on Friday 1 June!

Just like last year, they are looking for grown-ups around the UK to get involved, too! They are asking teachers and librarians to volunteer and help judge this year's stories.

So what are you waiting for?

National Libraries Day

The 4^th February is National Libraries Day, a day devoted to all types of libraries, library users, library staff and supporters. National Libraries Day has been organised to bring attention to the importance of libraries and the problems with the library closures currently taking place. Now, libraries are much more than just aisles of books now taking the role of a guide to information. People use libraries for family history searching, learning to use computers and much more. So, why not support your local library by popping in to see them!

Calling all budding scientists

The Google Science Fair has started a science fair and is calling anyone who loves sciences and finds it interesting. The idea is to come up with an exciting, interesting project. Lord of the Flies; Design a cover competition

A competition is open to design the new cover for Lord of the Flies. The competition is open to teenagers aged 13-16, and the deadline is the 20^th January 2012. Artists will need to have a read of the Illustrartion Brief but once they’ve had a read of that, pencils to the paper! The competition is being organised by Faber and Faber, an independent publishing house in London and The Guardian Children’s Books Website.
