Book Review: Seamus Heaney, The Making of the Poet

Book Title: Seamus Heaney, The Making of the Poet
Author: Michael Parker

This is a very useful  book, both for GCSE & A-Level students, where Heaney comes up in parts of the specification. A detailed insight is given into Heaney's life, and the book looks at the inspiration behind much of his poetry. Analysis of some poems is also given.

Particularly usefully, the book is split up into time periods, such as 'Affinities 1961-66' and 'Quickenings 1975-84'.

I'd give it: 10/10

Book Review: Butter

Book Title: Butter
Author: Erin Lange

Review:
An excellent story about a larger than average boy who is bullied by his classmates. It is these children who have given him the nickname 'Butter'. A talented saxophonist, he spends most of his time alone in his bedroom playing his saxophone or logging on to a social networking site. Things change when he sets up his
own blog under his nickname and announces that on New Years Eve he will eat himself to death, inviting anyone who want to, to watch on Skype! Will he follow this through? Read the book to find out.....

I'd give it: 8/10

Did you know.......

It's Black History Month?

And this year, the focus is on the arrival on the Windrush ship 65 years ago, when 492 Caribbean
passengers arrived in Tilbury Dock, Essex.

Symbolically, these people would become known as the 'Windrush Generation' and were seen as the beginning of post-war mass migration.

Do you know anything about Black History? Come and intrigue us in the Library!

Guess the book!

Which book has these opening lines?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.

Pupil librarian's display competition

Some of you may have seen our Pupil Librarians busy at work creating some new displays.

Ashley, Robert, Jack and Karl are all working on the displays; it's a competition between each other though!

What do you think makes a good Library display? Colour? Quotes? Book reviews? Let the lads know!

Have a look below at the National Libraries Day display which I (James) made:

Holiday Fun

So, here's a question for you. Where is this quote from:

“There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me but do not want me, then I’ll stay.  When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go. "

Do you know? If so, write your answer in the comments section! :-)

Book Review: How to choose your a-levels

All our pupils in year 11 are currently thinking about their option after GCSEs. Many will continue into the sixth form, some may go to College and some may take an apprenticeship.
It's often tricky deciding what you want to do/take. So many options and decisions- should I take history? Do you I enjoy music? How interesting and fascinating is Biology? What is the structure of A-level Georaphy like?
Well, if you're struggling to answer these questions, the how to choose your a-levels book is perfect for you. It has detailed information about subjects and a-levels in general.

National Libraries Day

Tomorrow is an important day in 'library world'. It's national Libraries Day!

National Libraries Day celebrates the great work which Libraries do all across the UK, in whichever form;- school libraries, public libraries, university libraries, special collections etc. Libraries are at a pivotal point in their time- many are closing and many are under threat from staff cuts. It was sad to see this article on The Guardian website: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/dec/10/uk-lost-200-libraries-2012 It shows the problem facing Libraries at the moment.....but lets look on the bright side:

Libraries are good. They aren't-they're amazing. When you step through the Library doors, you enter a world on knowledge, information, discovery and so much more. You've got you own trained Librarian to help you find the resources you require. There's no bias and no misleading information.

Libraries are great :-) And let National Libraries Day celebrate that!

Wise words....

Grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows. Fish don't try to swim, they just swim. Flowers don't try to bloom, they bloom. Birds don't try to fly, they fly. This is their intrinsic nature. The earth doesn't try to spin on its own axis; it is the nature of the earth to spin with dizzying speed and to hurtle through space. It is the nature of babies to be in bliss. It is the nature of the sun to shine. It is the nature of the stars to glitter and sparkle. And it is human nature to make our dreams manifest into physical form, easily and effortlessly.
